After the India’s Got Latent controversy, Samay Raina feared going bankrupt like Amitabh Bachchan due to lost sponsors, refunds, and cancelled projects.
India’s Got Latent row was one of the biggest challenges Samay Raina faced in his stand-up comedy career. With online hate, multiple FIRs, and threats following an episode featuring Ranveer Allahbadia that went on air, he faced a financial setback. Now, in a recent chat, Samay recalled how he feared getting bankrupt like Amitabh Bachchan.
Speaking in an interview with Dostcast, Samay Raina shared, “I lost all the upcoming episodes because everyone was scared and didn’t want their episode to be uploaded. I also lost the sponsors for those episodes. I had already received their payments and invested them in fixed deposits. I had to break those FDs and return the money. I was in a mess."
“I had several projects lined up and had even shot for ads, but they asked for their money back. I had also signed a deal with BookMyShow, where they had given me an advance for the entire tour, and all that money was already invested. I was extremely scared. At that time, I didn’t know what I would do. I knew no brand would come on board. My biggest fear was that I would go broke and fall into debt, like what happened with Amitabh Bachchan," the comedian further shared, explaining how he lived in constant fear for quite some time.
What is the India’s Got Latent controversy?
The controversy around India’s Got Latent began after a clip from the show went viral, featuring guest Ranveer Allahbadia asking a contestant an inappropriate question about ‘parents’ sex’, which triggered massive backlash online. The remark was widely criticised as offensive, leading to multiple FIRs being filed and political reactions as well. Following the outrage, Samay Raina took down all episodes of the show from YouTube and said he would cooperate with authorities. The incident also took a personal toll on him, with the comedian later opening up about the stress and anxiety he faced during the controversy.
