The Reserve Bank of India appoints Sonali Sen Gupta and Sanjay Kumar Hansda as Executive Directors. They will manage core departments, bringing decades of experience in finance, policy, and banking.
RBI Appoints EDs
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has appointed Sonali Sen Gupta and Sanjay Kumar Hansda as Executive Directors (ED). Gupta takes charge from October 09, 2025, while Hansda started his term on October 06, 2025.
Sonali Sen Career
Sonali Sen Gupta served as Regional Director for Karnataka at RBI’s Bangalore office. With over 30 years of experience, she has expertise in financial inclusion, banking regulation and human resource management.
Global Roles
Sonali Sen Gupta has represented the RBI in the G20’s Global Partnership for Financial Inclusion (GPFI) and the OECD’s International Network on Financial Education (INFE). She also served as a director on the board of the National Centre for Financial Education (NCFE).
Committee Roles
Sonali has also been a part of numerous internal and external committees. She is also RBI’s nominee director on Indian Overseas Bank’s board, highlighting her experience in governance and financial oversight.
ED Responsibilities
Graduated with an MBA in banking and finance, Sonali Sen Gupta is also a Certified Associate of the Indian Institute of Banking & Finance (IIBF). As Executive Director, she will oversee the Consumer Education, Financial Inclusion, and Inspection Departments at RBI.
Hansda Joins RBI
On the other hand, Sanjay Kumar Hansda has also been appointed as Executive Director of RBI, effective March 03, 2025. He reported back on October 06, 2025, after completing his deputation as Senior Advisor to the Executive Director (India) at the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
Career Background
Before becoming ED, Hansda served as Adviser in the Department of Economic and Policy Research, the Monetary Policy Department, and as Officer-in-Charge/Director of the Internal Debt Management Department. He also worked at the Bank of England as an Analyst on Financial Stability.

Hansda has over 30 years of experience in banking and finance. He specialises in money and credit, interest rates, liquidity, growth, inflation, financial and capital markets, industry and services, national accounts, savings, and the flow of funds.
Global & Committee Roles
Hansda has also overseen both sovereign and sub-sovereign debt management, collaborated with various regulatory authorities, participated in G-20 initiatives, and contributed to committees of the Bank of England, the Committee on the Global Financial System (CGFS), the Government of India, and RBI working groups.
