How bank holidays are classified
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) categorises bank holidays into three types: those under the Negotiable Instruments Act, RTGS holidays, and bank account closing days.
It is important to note that bank holidays are not the same nationwide. They vary depending on state-specific festivals and observances. However, banks remain shut across India on national holidays like Republic Day and Gandhi Jayanti.
Weekend bank closures
Banks follow a standard schedule on weekends: they are closed on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month, while remaining open on the first, third, and (if applicable) fifth Saturdays. Sundays are non-working days for all banks without exception.
Saturday closures fall under the Negotiable Instruments Act, which governs instruments such as cheques and promissory notes.
Banking services during holidays
Even when physical branches are closed, customers can still access most banking services. Digital banking platforms continue to function as usual, and ATMs remain operational 24/7. However, services that require a branch visit, such as passbook updates, will not be available until banks reopen.
